Alken-Maes is a Belgian brewing group created in 1988 from the merger of Brouwerij Maes in Waarloos and Brouwerij Cristal-Alken. Since 2008, it has been part of the Heineken group. The company is headquartered in Mechelen and produces such well-known beers as Cristal, Maes, Grimbergen, Hapkin, and Mort Subite, among others. Alken-Maes is one of the largest beer producers in Belgium and combines traditional brewing techniques with modern innovation.The brewery in Alken, known as Brouwerij Cristal, is the birthplace of the first Belgian lager, Cristal, introduced in May 1928 by Jozef Indekeu at Meeuwen. This lager was considered revolutionary, as many Belgian brewers at the time were unable to produce low-fermentation beer. Today, the brewery produces not only Cristal, but also other well-known beers such as Maes, Grimbergen and Affligem. With modern facilities for brewing, fermenting and lagering beer, as well as advanced bottling equipment for bottles and kegs, the Alken brewery plays a crucial role within Alken-Maes. More than 200 employees work here every day to produce beers for both the Belgian market and export abroad.
