NIRAS-ONDRAF is responsible for the safe management of all radioactive waste in Belgium and plays a key role in protecting both people and the environment. The organisation also oversees the decommissioning and remediation of nuclear facilities that have been taken out of service. Through continuous investment in research and development, NIRAS-ONDRAF works to optimise its current operations while developing sustainable, long-term solutions for radioactive waste management. In close cooperation with public authorities and through ongoing dialogue with society, it contributes to building a broadly supported and responsible policy framework.
As part of the continued modernisation and optimisation of its infrastructure, NIRAS is investing in the expansion and adaptation of its installations. These developments are essential to continue meeting the strictest safety standards and to efficiently address future challenges in radioactive waste management.
In the building for the storage of CSD resins and EOP waste, Winlock is installing fire doors and a fire resistant sectional shutter with a fire resistance rating of 60 minutes (EI1 60).
NIRAS is also building a new ROC (Reception and Storage Centre) for radioactive waste. This facility will receive, inspect and temporarily store waste safely from sources including hospitals, research facilities and nuclear sites. The project is part of Belgium’s management of low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste and is designed to ensure safe long-term processing and storage.
In this building, Winlock will install fire resistant sectional shutters with fire resistance ratings of 60 and 120 minutes, all equipped with Air Lock functionality, with several also featuring Safe Lock and Liquid Lock functionality.
These solutions contribute to enhanced fire safety for this sensitive infrastructure.
